Temperament

The Basset Hound is a gentle, affectionate, and friendly breed. They are laid-back and calm, making them great companions for families and children. Bassets are sociable and usually get along well with other pets and strangers. While they are intelligent, they can be stubborn and independent-minded, so patience is needed during training. They are loyal and loving, forming strong bonds with their family members. Additionally, Basset Hounds have a keen sense of smell and are alert, making them surprisingly good watchdogs despite their relaxed nature.

Health

The Basset Hound is generally a healthy breed but has some breed-specific health concerns. Their long, droopy ears make them prone to ear infections, so regular cleaning is important. They are also susceptible to obesity, which can worsen joint problems like hip dysplasia and lead to back issues due to their long spine. Eye conditions such as glaucoma and ectropion can also occur.
Proper care includes a balanced diet, moderate daily exercise, regular ear and eye checks, and routine vet visits to monitor joints and spine health. With attentive care, Basset Hounds can live a happy and healthy life, typically around 10–12 years.
