Temperament

The Dalmatian is an energetic, playful, and intelligent breed. They are very loyal to their family and often form strong bonds with their owners. Dalmatians are naturally alert and protective, making them good watchdogs, yet they are also friendly and social when properly trained.
They are highly active and thrive in homes that provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. While intelligent, they can sometimes be stubborn, so consistent training with positive reinforcement works best. They generally do well with children and other pets, especially if socialized early.

Health

The Dalmatian is generally a healthy and strong breed but is prone to certain genetic and breed-specific health concerns. One of the most common issues is deafness, with some Dalmatians born either partially or completely deaf. They are also prone to urinary stones due to their unique uric acid metabolism, so a proper diet and hydration are essential.
Other potential health concerns include hip dysplasia, which can affect mobility, and skin allergies, which may arise from food or environmental triggers. Regular veterinary checkups, a balanced diet, and consistent exercise play a key role in keeping them healthy.

Care Tips

  • Provide regular exercise (daily walks, runs, or playtime).
  • Maintain a low-purine diet to help prevent urinary stones.
  • Schedule regular hearing and health checkups.
  • Grooming is easy → weekly brushing keeps their short coat shiny.
