Temperament

German Shepherds are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and protective nature. They are highly trainable, excel in obedience, and are often used in police, military, and service work. With families, they are loving, alert, and watchful, making excellent guard dogs as well as companions. They require mental stimulation and daily exercise, as boredom can lead to destructive behaviors.

Health

German Shepherds are generally healthy but prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, a common issue due to their build. Other concerns include degenerative myelopathy, bloat (gastric torsion), and certain eye disorders. Regular exercise, weight management, and vet checkups are crucial to maintain their health. With proper care, they can live a long, active, and happy life.

Care Tips

  • Exercise: 1–2 hours daily (walks, play, agility, training).
  • Mental Stimulation: Use puzzle toys, obedience training, and scent work.
  • Diet: High-quality, protein-rich food; avoid overfeeding to prevent obesity.
  • Hydration: Always provide fresh, clean water.
  • Grooming: Brush 2–3 times weekly (daily during shedding seasons).
  • Bathing: Only when necessary to maintain coat health.
  • Hygiene: Regular ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care.
  • Training: Start early with positive reinforcement.
  • Socialization: Expose to people, pets, and environments from a young age.
  • Vet Checkups: Regular visits to monitor hips, elbows, and overall health.
  • Bloat Prevention: Watch for symptoms like swollen belly or restlessness.
  • Living Space: Best with ample space; not ideal for small apartments unless exercised well.
  • Family Time: Keep them included in family life; avoid leaving them alone for long hours.
